I didn't know there was a "Big Boss Line". "Big Boss Man", yes, but I
think the "boss" there is literal.

Without knowing the lyrics, could the "boss" be the way the word was used
as slang "boss song played by a boss DJ"? I seem to recall Boston was
called Bosstown for a bit for the same reasons, even if I'm not quite sure
what the slang "boss" meant.

Marketing. Someone tried to establish the "Bosstown Sound", sometime in
the mid-60s, as if it was some kind of grassroots thing like Liverpool
or San Francisco. Completely made up by suits in some office building.

OK, now I gotta hit Wiki....

Manufactured by MGM Records and producer Alan Lorber, included MGM acts
the Beacon Street Union, Ultimate Spinach, and Orpheus ("Can't Find The
Time"). A complete dud, right outa the box, though "Can't Find" was a
minor hit, at least in Boston. Also, I believe Skunk Baxter had
something to do with the Spinach, though he's not listed as a member on
the Wiki page - played the sessions or something.

TMI....

Jackie Wilson released a record titled "Big Boss Line."

The expression is heard in Candy and the Kisses, The 81, and Dee Dee
Sharp, Mashed Potato Time. Probably other songs too.

Jerry Blavat (DJ/Host) was into a lot of dance music and hops, and - "referring to himself as "the Geator with the Heater" and "the big boss with the big hot sauce."

"Boss" meant good, e.g., "That's boss, man." Duane Eddy charted with "Boss
Guitar" and no doubt one might other similar usages from that time period.

When I was a pre-teen and heard someone say something was "Boss" I
thought he was saying "Balls," i.e. testicles.

When I was a teen, "boss" meant "cool".

One of our local bands, that made it kinda big and had a record released, was called the Boss Blues.

That sounds about right. I couldn't remember an exact interpretation, but
it certainly was used a lot "Boss sound" was also in use back then.

I went looking for this stuff after reading this.

Rat Fink Ed Big Daddy Roth - Boss Mustang

I remember those model kits from the 60s and whenever.

"The guy over the years has epitomized cool," Chodosh said. "Even now, in so
many ways, he is still the Boss Fink."
http://www.hotrodworks.net/roth.html

I think maybe Boss might have originally been a hotrod term.

Or Boss means big engine:
Boss is the internal name for a family of large displacement V8 engines
from Ford Motor Company intended to compete with Chrysler Hemi engines
and General Motors' 6.2 L Vortec engines.
It was revived in early 2006 by Mark Fields[citation needed] and was
given the new name of Boss in light of the devastation caused by
Hurricane Katrina in 2005

That makes sense. A term used by hotrodders, originally having some
meaning but then into more common use, taken up by others, so "everyone
knows" what it means, but it's all a bit vague.
