"Witchi Tai To" (In true American Indian style,
song was based on a peyote chant, which the singer
had stolen from his grandfather).

Jim Pepper later went on to make about 30
worthless albums.
But the magic of this recording was something
he could never again duplicate in the studio -
although he made at least two other versions of it.
------------------------------------
Sing along!

WITCHI-TIE-TO, GIMEE RAH
WHOA RAH NEEKO, WHOA RAH NEEKO
HEY NEY, HEY NEY, NO WAH

WITCHI-TIE-TO, GIMEE RAH
WHOA RAH NEEKO, WHOA RAH NEEKO
HEY NEY, HEY NEY, NO WAH

WATER SPIRIT FEELIN'
SPRINGIN' ROUND MY HEAD
MAKES ME FEEL GLAD
THAT I'M NOT DEAD

WITCHI-TIE-TIE, GIMEE RAH
WHOA RAH NEEKO, WHOA RAH NEEKO
HEY NEY, HEY NEY, NO WAH

WITCHI-TIE-TIE, GIMEE RAH
WHOA RAH NEEKO, WHOA RAH NEEKO
HEY NEY, HEY NEY, NO WAH

This wasn't the hit record in my neighborhood. The hit here was by
Harpers Bizzare, I believe! What a great gift to culture! I had not
realized that this was a Peyote Chant, but that does make sense! I
did always hear the lyric as "Witchi Tai To Him God a Rye" however,
with RYE being, of course, the original source of lysergic acids used
to make the gift of Albert Hoffaman to the world!

The version I have is by Topo D.Bill (sic) and was produced by Larry
Smith from the Bonzo Dog Band. It's a single on the Charisma label. It
came in a picture sleeve, rare for the Uk at the time - 1971 I think.

I doubt he had to STEAL it, in the Eurocentric sense. These chants
are gifted to the blood inheritors of the tradition.

Jim Pepper later went on to make about 30 worthless albums.
Please make that specific to YOUR tastes and opinion. I value all I
have by him.

This "peyote" chant was used in sweat lodge purification ceremonies
where the "Water Spirits SINGing, spring round my head" referred to
the steam produced by the water poured on the rocks (Earth
Grandfathers) that were super-heated in the ceremonial fire and placed
in the center of the sweat lodge. Having participated in numerous
sweat lodge events I can tell you that peyote is NOT an essential
ingredient to engender personal visions, especially when you are
packed in with perhaps 20 other naked or near naked men (usually
gender-specific events) in a close to air-tight environment where the
temperature may reach 120-150 degrees depending on the construction of
the lodge, number of participants and length of your stay in the
lodge. Usually there were three to five passes or introducng "new"
hot rocks and more water and sacred tobacco on top of them while
personal prayers where lifted to the Great Spirit. One would tend to
sweat out a LOT of impurities during these sessions and after one left
would often just lay outside and look at the sky or stars depending on
whne you did the ceremony.

I introduced the song to many of these ceremonies having learned it
back in the sixties from the Everything is Everything version and the
Jim Pepper "Pepper's Pow-Wow" version on Herbie Mann's Atlantic
Records Distributed Embryo Records.

Now THERE is a collectable! It was going for $30-$50 back in the
seventies and was only briefly in print during the early seventies,
Great version, authentic Native American production. It was played
extensively in our region by the underground FM station of choice and
thus became highly sought after.

I do love the Everything is Everything 45. The LP (which I still own
on Vanguard Apostolic Records (refering to the Apostolic Studio in
which it was recorded, where one of the engineers was Tony Bongiovi,
father of future star you know who) is a jazz -rock affair helmed by
leader Chris Hills (guitar, bass, drums & vocals, though NOT on Witchi
Tai To). Jim Pepper's Witchi Tai To is is his composition and vocal
on the LP which also includes his sax and flute work all over the
record. Honestly, Witchi Tai To is the best thing on the LP.

Also noted, I do like the Harpers Bizarre version AND the Brewer &
Shipley version is ALMOST as good as the Pepper version IMHO.

Chris Hills was the group's usual lead singer and songwriter, but Pepper
wrote and sang lead on "Witchi Tai To."
