Perhaps this is the objective of some song writers that, there music
can be taken so many different ways that, there can be nothing but
controversy and discussion over it...hence the sales will go up.

I find Sunshine Superman so subtle in trippy language and romantic
thoughts that I just can't seem to 'see' what side Donovan is on
here. Here are the lyrics:

Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways
It'll take time, I know it but in a while
You're gonna be mine, I know it, we'll do it in style
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine

I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody's hustlin' just to have a little scene
When I say we'll be cool I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, a-it never ends
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find

Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah!
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
'bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

I'll pick up your hand
I'll pick up your hand

"I could have tripped out easy" sure makes the LSD implication fast
and foremost. Windowpane acid was supposed to be a newer mellower
Acid on the scene which was supposedly safer. Could this be the
meaning for Donovan's enchantress as "sunshine came through my window
softly today"?

Or is this just the wild imagination of a young Scotsman trying to
tell the American MalePublic on the wiles of how to pick up a nice
hippie woman?

I just love the song as it seems like Donovan is in this fantasy
conversation that he probably couldn't be pulling off in the presence
of a real chick. Yet, I bet the female populace thinks if this song
as highly romantic. The song was sure catchy and did reach numero
uno, and even had the likes of Mel Torme adding it to his songlist.

I always thought he was comparing his new found romantic experience to an
acid trip. But, that's just speculation.

Whatever it means, it's "beautiful in it's obscurity."
