This is driving me crazy, what song is this and who performed it?

It starts out "one, two, three..." later in the song it states "It's easy
(It's so easy), it's like taking candy from a baby".

Any ideas?

Thanks

One-Two-Three - Al Stewart on "Russians & Americans"

One, two, three. That's how elementary it's gonna be. Just fine and
dandy.
It's easy. Like taking candy from a baby. Primitive country - rich in
minerals, you pay them with beads. Tip the generals. It's easy, like
taking
candy from a baby. The hard part is learning about it. The hard part
is
breaking through to the truth. The hard part is learning to doubt what
you
read, what you hear, what you see on the news.
Foreign policy, made above my head. Well, no one asked me. They just
laughed
and said, "It's easy (it's so easy) like taking candy from a baby.
It's easy
(it's so easy) like taking candy from a baby
(One, two three, ah...) (One, two three, ah...) Once they get you
sucked into
the system, once they get you under control. The hard part is knowing
how to
resist the grip that they keep on your mind and your soul.
So in the end, we just compromise and pretend. If you close your eyes,
it's
easy (it's so easy), like taking candy from a baby. It's easy (it's so
easy), like taking candy from a baby.

By now you've seen that it's Len Barry's original the writer wanted. I
didn't know Al Stewart re-made it, and I find it hard to imagine him
doing it. It's a world away from Stewart's usual style.

Well I didn't know the Len Barry original but an AMG search learnt me
that
there are a lot of different versions of that song, including ones by
Herbie Mann,
Ramsey Lewis and David McCallum ! Seems like Al Stewart somewhat
adapted the lyrics though.

1-2-3, oh, that's how elementary it's gonna be
C'mon, let's fall in love, it's easy (it's so easy)
Like takin' candy (like takin' candy) from a baby

A-B-C (A-B-C) fallin' in love with you was easy for me (easy for me)
And you can do it, too, it's easy (it's so easy)
Like takin' candy (like takin' candy) from a baby

Baby, there's nothin' hard about love
Basically, it's as easy as pie
The hard part is livin' without love
Without your love, baby, I would die

<mostly instrumental with (1-2-3) (1-2-3)>

It's easy (it's so easy)
Like takin' candy (like takin' candy) from a baby, yay

One and one are two (one and one are two)
I know you love me and oh,oh, how I love you (how I love you)
Don't try to fight it 'cause it's easy (it's so easy)
Like takin' candy (like takin' candy) from a baby, yay

1-2-3 (1-2-3) oh, that's how elementary it's gonna be (it's gonna be)
C'mon, let's fall in love, it's easy (1-2-3)

FADE

Oh, that's how elementary ...

I saw Len Barry perform this at an Oldies show about 10 or more years ago.
Great song.

I've never understood, is taking candy from a baby supposed to be easy or
difficult?

Len Barry (real name: Leeonard Borisoff) is an interesting study in
the history of pop music in the late 1950's and 1960's. A good
basketball player for the Overbrook High Panthers in the Philadelphia
area, he helped to form a group that went through several incarnations
and name changes, eventually hitting it big as the Dovells. In 1961
the Dovells (with Len Barry on vocals) went to #2 on the charts with
the Bristol Stomp (Bristol is a town near Philadelphia). Barry also
was instrumental in securing a recording contract for another
Philadelphia area group that he helped quite a bit called the Orlons
-- they reached #2 the following year with The Wah Watusi. Both groups
had subsequent hits. Barry left the Dovells to go solo late in 1963
and developed a stage act. He was not yet finished coming up with #2
songs. As solo artist, he reached #2 nationally with 1-2-3 in 1965.
