Jefferson Airplane drummer, Joey Covington, dies in crash
Wednesday, June 05, 2013

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KABC) -- Former Jefferson Airplane drummer
Joey
Covington was killed in a Palm Springs car accident Tuesday.

Covington, 67, died when his sedan slammed head-on into a wall near a
curve at Belardo Road near South Palm Canyon Drive at about 5 p.m. He
was the only person in the car, and according to authorities, he was
not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Witnesses say there were no tire marks and no braking. Police
declined
to give out any details on the cause of the crash. Covington, a Palm
Springs resident, was declared dead at the scene.

Roads in the area were shut down for several hours while police
investigated.

Covington helped found Blues-rock group Hot Tuna in 1969, but he was
best known for his involvement with Jefferson Airplane. He wrote and
sang the last hit for Jefferson Airplane 1971's "Pretty As You Feel"
featured on the Bark Album.

I don't kow, I saw his name the other day and thought "Hot Tuna". That
first album is pretty important.

Yes, pretty good. The one with Papa John Creach, right?

No, the first one was recorded live, then the drummer changed and that's
when Papa John appeared, I guess the album was "Burgers".

Papa John Creach was around for when the Fillmore closed in 71, the movie
(at least the original version, some is apparently missing from the DVD
release of some years back) shows him playing away on his fiddle wearing
love beads.

Some of those bands were so "incestuous" I'm not sure whether Papa John
was Airplane or Hot Tuna first, he obviously played on JA albums and into
the Jefferson Starship era. The drummers were discussed some time back,
Skip Spence then SPencer Dryden. The same with the Grateful Dead,
originally New Riders of the Purple Sage was mostly GD members, with just
enough added members for the "country sound", but then that rapidly
changed.
