What a masterpiece! And, in those days, songs had something meaningful
to say:

I've always liked Clark's song, "I Never Picked Cotton" (1970--#5 US
Billboard Country Music; #2 Canada Country Music; #122 US Billboard Pop). A
masterful song of irony, indeed. My folks saw him live in Branson, Missouri,
several years ago and brought back the taped performance. They've loaned it
to me on occasion. I've watched it probably eight times. What a fantastic
guitarist, showman and all-around genuinely fine personality. His guitar
playing is so wondrously remarkable that one almost forgets that he began
his musical career as a banjo virtuoso.

My solo, acoustic, instrumental 6-string guitar version of the Peter, Paul &
Mary classic, "Puff (The Magic Dragon)," #2 US Billboard 1963.

Roy Clark is one of the artists in my blog entry this week, for his
song "Come Live With Me." Good song (and a #1 country hit), even
though I prefer Ray Charles's version.

For many, Clark's skill as an accomplished instrumentalist is
secondary to his long stint hosting "Hee Haw." Which is a shame,
really.

Other great Roy Clark songs: "Thank God and Greyhound" (which I liked
for its sentiment alone), "I Never Picked Cotton" and "Right or Left
at Oak Street."

I agree, a great song, Rockford! Sometimes I've wondered who could
sing it better, maybe nobody.

Who could sing it better?

The song was recorded by its writer Charles Aznavour (both in French &
English)

Lena Horne
Mel Torme
Shirley Bassey
Dusty Springfield (flop single)
Eydie Gorme
Jack Jones
Marty Robbins
Glen Campbell
Johnny Mathis
Andy Williams

And that's only in English.

Also Julio Iglesias's version

The Roy Clark version is OK.

Appreciate you tellin' me it's "OK". But, that's your opinion,
too me, it's great, that's my opinion. Jack Jones had a great song
called "Wives and Lovers". I could name all the others and their top
songs, but "Yesterday, When I Was Young", belongs to Roy Clark, in my
opinion.

There have been lots of great versions of the song, but Roy Clark's is
the one most Americans remember. It seems ironic to me that he
recorded this bittersweet ballad about lost youth when he was only in
his mid-thirties.

Since you appreciate the song, do yourself a favor and seek out Charles
Aznavour's original version on You Tube. The song belongs to him.

IMO, Aznavour's English version is better than his original French version
titled "Hier Encore." There's only a handful of songs by Clark that I like
& this isn't one of them.

Clark is a much better instrumentalist than singer. I remember seeing him
on some of the talk shows (such as the daytime Steve Allen show) before he
hit it big with "Tips of My Fingers" & his appearances always showcased his
talents as guitarist/fiddler; I don't recall seeing him sing during any of
those performances. He hammed it up a bit while he played but not to the
extent that he did on Hee-Haw.

Here's the best (only?) thing I like by Roy Clark :-

An early effort by him. From 1958 the decent rockabilly styled "Please
Mr Mayor"

Yes, I have heard Aznavour's version, and it is excellent, certainly
superior to Clark's. I didn't mean to denigrate Aznavour in any way -
especially since he wrote the song. He's a legend, and rightfully so.
It's just that most Americans were introduced to "Yesterday When I Was
Young" because of Roy Clark's recording, which was a huge hit in its
day. No matter who else sung it, if you mention this song I will
always think of Roy Clark first.

Charles Aznavour's version is great, I agree. I got my wife to listen,
even heard Mathis's version, but it's Roy Clark, probably because it's
the one we've always heard and also because it's so damn good,
heartfelt, stuff like 'at.

Some say some lyrics don't make any sense, but the stereo is nice!!!
