Questions about the "Girl Watcher" song

"I'm a girl watcher, i'm a girl watcher, watching girls go by...my, my, my".
I can't get the hook of this whimsical song out of my head! Everytime I hear
it, I never catch the name of the male vocal group who sings it. I just want
to know the name of the group, where they came from, if they were black or
white (the group sounded black, but then again, they may have been blue-eyed
soul boys), if they recorded an album with "Girl Watcher" on it, and what CDs
can I find this song on.

Thanks!

They were called The O'Kaysions, and your suspicions are correct--they were
white. But I didn't find that out until many years later.

By the way, I tried typing "i'm a girl watcher" into the Google search bar,
and the first three hits gave the name of the group. Searching at
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll reveals that they were from North
Carolina and that the song dates from 1968. The All-Music Guide, or AMG, is
not always accurate, but it's a good starting point.

The original indie release of the 45 came with a picture sleeve showing them to
be a bunch of nerdy-looking white boys. Its funny to see considering how they
sound! the ABC master was dubbed from a 45 because when the multitrack was
mixed to mono, it was erased, and when the 45 was made, so was the mono tape
master (not the first time this has happened either, sadly).

Add this to the fact that the ABC singles masters were wiped to make
space in the vaults when MCA bought the label, it would appear that
the digital remaster is a dub of a dub. Ugh!

Right, but at least one cd (on Rhino) went to an original label pressing of the
45 to remaster from to get the best possible sound from that. Though, there was
a Girl Watcher lp, though it was in stereo only and im assuming the song was in
fake stereo on there, if someone could undo the rechanneling from there, it
would be the best tape source for using.

I may be wrong, but I was always under the impression that they were from
the North West portion of South Carolina, near Spartanburg. Of course that
area is also near Charlotte, NC as well. I got that from the publishing
company name, North State Music. I have heard of that area of So. Carolina
being called the "north state", but for what reason I have no idea.

Some of the members of the group reorganized as the Fabulous Kays, a beach
music band that recorded "The Doo Wop Song" in 1994 or so.

Whitburn lists them as being from Wilson, North Carolina.

Interesting! My earliest memory of this song is being stuck for two days with a
busted transmission in Wilson NC with 2 of my friends in June 1968 on our way
to Florida. I heard Girl Watcher several times on the local radio station. I
never heard it again until months later when it started getting play in NY.

Over the years I did learn they were from the Carolinas, but I never knew they
were from Wilson itself. To this day whenever I hear the song I think of the
miserable time we had stuck in Wilson instead of drinking beer in Daytona
beach. ---Ken

I read about this group in the Whitburn "One Hit Wonders" book that I
bought probably in the early 1990s. I know there's a newer edition of
this book that's come out since. It was there that I first discovered
(from a picture of the group) that this was a white group. Also, if I
recall correctly, they were an instrument-playing band, as opposed to
just being a vocal group.
