NEWPORT, R.I. The lead singer of the 1960s family band The Cowsills has

died _ and his family learned it just after a memorial service for his
brother.

According to family members, William Cowsill died Friday in Canada. He
had been suffering from emphysema, osteoporosis and other ailments. He
was 58 years old.

Cowsill was the frontman for the band bearing his family's name. The
Newport group was discovered by an N-B-C producer in 1965. Soon after,
they recorded three number-one hits including "Hair," "The Rain, The
Park and Other Things" and "Indian Lake."

News of his death came just after a memorial ceremony honoring William
Cowsill's younger brother, Barry. Barry Cowsill drowned after Hurricane

Katrina flooded New Orleans.

The Cowsills were a very
underrated band, in my opinion. Check out early singles like "All I
Really Want to Be is Me".

They were not a huge group here in the UK but I love "The Rain,The Park And
Other Things" and may buy their greatest hits over Amazon. So like the Mamas
and Papas and Spanky and our Gang, superb.

This could start getting spooky if one of them soon depart.

Very sad, indeed. I always liked the Cowsills--a really fresh, full
harmonizing sound, vibrant, excellently produced, and just great fun to
listen to.

Incidentally, I uploaded my fourth Podcast of music from the year 1967
this past Friday, Feb. 17, the very day William Cowsill passed away. I
included in that podcast "The Rain, The Park And Other Things (Flower
Girl)" by The Cowsills--but, while assembling and uploading that
podcast on Friday, I was completely unaware that Mr. Cowsill had
passed, or that a memorial service for his brother Barry Cowsill, who
drowned in the Hurricane Katrina flooding in New Orleans, had been
scheduled. I just learned of William Cowsill's death today through
***@comcast's posting. This means nothing, really, I know--just one
of those curious coincidences one encounters from time to time.

None of those songs hit #1 on the US Billboard charts, by the way. Both
"Hair" and "The Rain, The Park And Other Things (Flower Girl)" ascended
the US Billboard chart to #2--"Hair" in March-April, 1969; and "TRTP
And Other Things" in October-November, 1967. "Indian Lake" peaked at
#10 in the US in June-July, 1968. They're all great songs, in my
opinion.

Little late on the gun here, sorry.
I double agree this is sad and the Cowsills were very underrated.
No question.

Steve, a forever cowsills fan.
