This band may seem tame in comparison to more modern metal, but this was a
genre born out of
the 1960s counterculture at a time when bands were experimenting with new
ideas.

pretty interesting stuff.

don't write off the forerunners of Metal!

according to wikipedia:

"The rock band Coven were the first band to introduce the "Sign of the
Horns" to rock and pop culture as seen on their 1969 debut album release
"Witchcraft".They are a rock band, composed of vocalist Jinx Dawson, bassist
Oz Osborne (not to be confused with Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath), Chris
Neilsen on guitar, Rick Durrett and later John Hobbs on keyboards, and
drummer Steve Ross."

now, does anyone know who the very first heavy metal band was?

One thing is for sure. "Wicked Woman" is way better than "One Tin
Soldier".

Blue Cheer
Blue Cheer was a very loud, garage band. If that's your definition of heavy
metal, then they fit the bill.

Sorry, I cut out all that cross-posting crap.

Blue Cheer
Are you sure they were around before Hendrix and Cream?

I know both Cream and Hendrix released their prospective debut albums in
1966.

Who, Kinks, and Troggs-definitely influential on Protopunk

Hendrix, Cream, Blue Cheer, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, and ,Arthur Brown
were
very influential on ProtoMetal which consisted of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple,
Black Sabbath, and Leslie West and Mountain among others.

maybe Blue Cheer is a precursor to Grunge, but then isn't Grunge a style of
Metal
or is it more of a Punk/Metal hybrid?

I would be inclined to say that Grunge is a Punk/Metal hybrid.
