Healthwatch: Rascals’ Gene Cornish
(YOUNG) RASCALS GENE
CORNISH COLLAPSES ON STAGE
Prayers continue for (Young) Rascals co-founder Gene Cornish, who collapsed on stage in Billings, Montana during the evening of 07 September.
The 74 year old Cornish (pictured below earlier this year) was performing at the Alberta Bair Theater with Rascals keyboardsman Felix Cavaliere. They had just completed their opening number, the band's 1968 A Beautiful Morning single, when Cornish suddenly took ill. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he is presently undergoing treatment.
However, early reports received on the morning of 08 September have been encouraging.
"Thank God", said Vanilla Fudge drummer and fellow Atlantic/Atco alumnus, Carmine Appice, who was in Billings with Cornish at the time.
"He answered all of our prayers".
The Rascals (who dropped the "Young" from their name with the release of their Once Upon A Dream album for Atlantic in late 1967) were responsible for a wealth of stellar R&B/garage rock-inspired releases in the closing years of the 1960s, including You Better Run, I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore, I've Been Lonely Too Long, Groovin' (which became an instrumental classic via a cover by Booker T. And The M.G.s for Stax), A Girl Like You, It's Wonderful, How Can I Be Sure, Carry Me Back and the psych romp, See.
"Gene Cornish is better", said Appice in an online statement.
"Thanks to everyone here at the theatre in Billings for the fast response. It saved our good friend's life. Thank you, God!"
